Yuehmei Sugar Refinery was established in 1909 (ROC year 3) and was originally named Dajia Sugar Factory. It was affiliated with the Dai-Nippon Sugar Co., Ltd. After Taiwan's restoration, the Taiwan Sugar Corporation took over, making it part of the Taichung main factory. In August 1945, the factory was repaired and resumed production. Due to environmental changes, it ceased sugar production in March 1999 and transformed into a tourist factory.
To allow visitors to experience the process of weighing sugarcane, this scale was specially designed on February 12, 1999. Since Yuehmei Sugar Refinery is the northernmost sugar factory currently preserved by Taiwan Sugar Corporation(Note 1), this scale is named "TSC First Scale," symbolizing the first scale of Taiwan Sugar Corporation from north to south and representing Taiwan Sugar Corporation's pursuit of excellent service.(Note2)
During the sugar production period, sugarcane had to be weighed at the weighing station upon arrival at the factory. Since the weight of sugarcane directly affected the farmers' income and the factory's costs, the fairness of weighing has always been highly valued.
Note 1: The northernmost sugar factory in Taiwan was Taipei Sugar Factory, which was abolished in 1942 and the factory has been demolished.
Note 2: The sugarcane raw material was weighed at the weighing station, not here. The Yuehmei Sugar Refinery weighing station is currently preserved in the park and is located opposite the Wufen Station platform.
