The old clinic of Hualien Sugar Factory mainly consists of two buildings. One is a wooden building built on the south side of the factory in 1937 (Showa 12), and the other is a reinforced brick building built near the center of the factory in 1960 (Republic of China).
From the Japanese occupation period to the early period of the Republic of China, the wooden building on the south side was used as a clinic. In 1960 (Republic of 1949), the second clinic was completed. The first clinic was used for registration or office work, and the new clinic was the main place for medical treatment.
In the old days, there was a lack of medical services in the township, and people had difficulty seeking medical treatment. They had to take a train to and from Hualien City to seek medical treatment, which was very time-consuming. The Hualien Sugar Factory Clinic had complete medical equipment, including internal medicine, surgery, and pediatrics. In addition to sugar factory employees and family members, it also provided consultations for patients from neighboring towns and towns, benefiting countless people in the sugar factory and surrounding areas. It was not until the 1983 that the government opened a national health insurance program that closed operations.
