Since the Japanese-occupied period, sugar factories all over Taiwan began to have a lot of wooden caravans behind locomotives around the factories. However, the wooden caravans are very old therefore they are often easily eroded and rotted, causing the lack of strength in the wood and its structure. Hence, after 1950 each sugar factory will change the outside of the wooden covered trucks into iron-sheet cover when repairing. The trucks’ original wooden sliding door will also change to steel reinforced iron sheet covered sliding door. Inside the HuaLien sugar factory, you can see a lot of iron caravans parked outside of the engine house. This becomes one of the important railroad cultural scenes.
