This is where sugarcane is harvest and it was established in 1948. It is a strengthen-brick-building. After sugarcane is harvest in the cane land, large amount of them are transported to the weighing place to be weighed. Then 5 to 7 kg of the sugarcane are taken out as sample to provide the reference quantity of the number of sugarcane and other impurities. The raw material resource of HuaLien sugar factory has two kinds： one comes from the sugar factory’s own farm, meaning all sugar produced from the grown sugarcane are owned by the sugar factory; the other one is to collaborate with the sugarcane farmers, meaning the factory will have to share the sugar with the farmers. After the sagar are extracted from sugarcane and made into an amount of sugar, the sugar factory and the farmers then start to distribute it according to ratio, using the weight of the sugarcane to calculate. Therefore, there is an old saying in Taiwanese says, “It is the most idiotic to let the sugar factory to weigh your sugarcane”. It is possible and reasonable to say this in earlier year because back then weighing is a manual task. Hence, only will the person who is in charge of the weighing knows how to do it. Later on after the sugar factory on the west side went wrong and farmers protested strongly, the situation changed to having a representative of the sugarcane farmers and the factory to supervise the weighing condition. Since 1970s, those 過磅 services are all open to the public and all documented. Therefore, it could not be counterfeited. Moreover, there will be a representative of the sugarcane farmer to supervise the process.
In the early phase, sugarcane were weighed by weigh-bridge. It is the same as the regular weigh-bridge, having a big iron sheet on the ground. Later on it came the electronic scale equipments and the information were recorded immediately. Every year before starting the operation, the sugar factory’s weighbridges must go through the examination from Bureau of Standards, Metrology and Inspection, for confirmation of the accuracy and quality of the weighing.
