The sugar factory was built in 1921 (Taisho 10 years) as a steel structure iron sheet building. It was nominated as a county historical site. The main material that is used to construct the appearance of the factory is iron sheet. In the recent renovation, the repair of the iron sheets and the antirust paint have color variation since the deterioration rate of the iron sheets and the paint are different. This is caused by the repeating renovations. Turns out it actually becomes a feature in this area. The variance and development of the interior space and appearance can even be see as HuaLien sugar factory’s record. The factory’s interior space could be divided in to milling room, centrifuging room, boiling room, and other sugar-production space. The equipments that are used in sugar production are still well-preserved. In the existing factory buildings, bullet marks that were left from the second world war are found on the support structure of the sugarcane conveyor in the sugar factory. The sugar factory in the early phase use carbonic acid method to produce sugar and mainly purchase machines that were made in Japan, including machines from the Tokyo Kikai corporation, Meiji Electric Industries, and other; only few purchase were from the United State and United Kindom. The early sugar factory mainly produce raw sugar.
It was not until 1958 to 1959 that the factory switched to produce by lime method, and continue to use this method until it stopped the production in 2002. Carbonic acid method and lime method’s biggest difference on producing sugar is the way how they clean the cane juice; the process of raising the PH value of the cane juice and then induce it into the cleaning tank to set apart and precipitate, and then repeatedly filtering the clean sugarcane juice. The muddy part of the sugarcane juice that has precipitated on the bottom are removed with other impurities. The sugarcane juice then will be induced into vacuum filter to remove dirt.
