Sugar industry development of Hualien started mainly with “Thn̂g-phō͘”run by the Han people. During the early stage of the Japanese Colonial Era, it was operated by Kata-kumi, owned by a Japanese named Kata Kinzaburoh.
Given that it was not easy to develop business in Hualien, Kata’s business was later bought by the Taitoh Development Co., Ltd., which later merged with “Ensuiko Sugar Refining Co., Ltd..”After merging,“Kotobuki Sugar Factory” was founded in 1913, located in present-day Shoufeng Township and “Yamato Factory,” the predecessor of present-day Guangfu Sugar Factory, was founded in Guangfu Township in 1921.
By the later stage of WW2, both factories were seriously damaged by allied bombers and “Kotobuki Sugar Factory” was demolished while “Yamato Factory” was preserved and renovated after assessment by experts, making the latter the only sugar factory in Hualien County.
