Hualien Tourism Sugar Factory has preserved the most complete Japanese-style wooden buildings in Taiwan. This place which takes up 4.9 hectares has 27 Japanese-style dormitories that can accommodate 73 households, single’s dormitories, boarding house, employee clinic, and office building. Observing this place from its external appearance , there is a certain distance between buildings, and jasmine oranges were planted as fences, providing a high degree of privacy. Precious old trees from the Japanese Colonial Era are preserved here, making it a place with an abundant nostalgic atmosphere.
Given that there are many typhoons and earthquakes in Hualien, “slanted struts” were added on the buildings’ structure, making them one of the greatest features of the Japanese-style dormitory buildings of Hualien Sugar Factory. Also, numerous “musou mado” were used for ventilation. Other designs such as the “engawa,” that connects to the backyard, “amadobukuro” for typhoon prevention, and “nureen,” where housewives can talk gossip, can all be seen here.
