Pingtung Sugar Factory used to be known as Akow Sugar Refinery during the Japanese Colonial Era. In 1938, Taiwan Sugar Manufacturing Co., Ltd. Research Center was founded. It has 5 buildings, of which most were used as research laboratories.
On June 23, 2006, it was registered as a county historical building by Pingtung County Government. The external walls of building 1 and 2 were covered with SCRATCH tiles, meaning that a row of nails of comb-like thin bamboo was used to scratch the surface of the undried tiles to create patterns and a 3D sense. The various alternations presented on the appearance of the building was a fashionable design back then.
