Pingtung Sugar Factory was built on December 1, 1908 (the commencement ceremony of Akow Sugar Refinery) and was subordinated under Taiwan Sugar Manufacturing Co., Ltd. during the Japanese Colonial Era.
The factory ceased to operate in Octobor 1997. Taiwan Sugar Corp. Pingtung Branch Office was founded on October 1, 2005 to check on the inventory and preservation of its cultural heritage sites.
Up to today, 1,126 items have been registered (including 42 items lent to Qiaotou Sugar Museum). Visitors reached 42,649 people by late March 2020. Its abundant collection of sugar industry histories is worth visiting.
